The Prakashchandra jackfruit tree is a notable variety of jackfruit originally cultivated from a Malaysian-origin seed. This unique cultivar has its mother tree located in Anandapuram Village, Shimoga District, Karnataka, India. The mother tree, now about 15 years old, has adapted well to the local climate and soil conditions, showcasing resilience and robust growth characteristics. This jackfruit variety stands out for its promising qualities, making it suitable for both consumption and potential commercial cultivation. The Prakashchandra jackfruit’s origin and successful adaptation underline its agricultural value and potential as a reliable variety for farmers and jackfruit enthusiasts.
This famous breed of jackfruit has been registered to the custodian farmer Mr. Prakash Nayak under PPVFR & A, New Delhi.
Plant Size: Delivered as a well-established sapling (8-12 months old), ready to be planted. The plant weighs around 1.5 kg to 2.5 kg.
Growth Conditions: The Prakashchandra jackfruit, being a dwarf variety, can be accommodated in a high density arrangement with 20ft x 20ft spacing (almost 100 trees per acre). The tree grows decently strong but doesn’t grow taller than 15 to 20 feet and performs best under dry, low rainfall conditions. However, under high rainfall and humid conditions in the coastal and Western Ghats regions, it is advised to protect the trees with pre-monsoon fungicide application as a preventive measure against fungal attack.
Harvest Period: Typically, this variety starts yielding within 18 to 20 months of planting. But to ensure a longer lifespan and better quality of fruits, it is advised to allow the yield only after 4 to 5 years of initial growth, which enables it to develop a very high yielding capacity in its future service life under minimum irrigation and fertigation. Typically a properly grown 6 to 10 year old healthy Prakashchandra tree can yield up to 100 to 200 kg of Ripe fruits (about 10 to 20 ton per acre)
Key Features:
- The Prakashchandra jackfruit variety is most famous for its off-season and multiseason bearing characteristics, which means that a fully matured tree can produce fruits almost twice to three times a year, most notably from November to March, when there is almost no supply of jackfruits in the general market, allowing growers to command and fetch the highest price for their fruits during this period.
- Another advantage is the adaptability of its tender fruits for vegetable applications, which allows growers to research and create a wide range of potential value-added products, the most notable of which is one of the most acceptable raw materials for the globally popular vegan meat concept.
- The ripe fruits have appealing orange bulbs, which are decently crisp and juicy with very high sweetness (TSS from 25 up to 35) and a strong, fragrant honey flavour.
- Fruit size is typically 15 kg up to 25 kg and has a good uniform cylindrical shape.
- Fruits, when harvested at full maturity, are almost gumless or latex-free and have a good recovery up to 50% with densely packed bulbs.
